Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) Handicap
Firstly, the Foxer Dinghy does NOT have a proper PY number. What is below is based on collecting info from various places to come up with a reasonable value to use for club-level racing.
RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Handicaps are generated annually by the RYA based on results from multi-class races returned to them by club race officers across the UK (and possibly from further afield too?). For dinghies that have sufficient results, a handicap value is generated that nets out differences between dinghies and allows results to be compared, leaving the skill of the helm and crew the determining factor in race results. There needs to be a reasonable quantity of results to remove the influence from individual helmsmen/women.
As most Foxer racing is single-class racing on the Hamble, there are insufficient returns to the RYA to allow a PY value to be calculated. 'Unofficial' PY values for the Foxer have, however, been used in different situations:
Date | Club | Event | Value |
---|---|---|---|
2013 | Warsash SC | Swanwick, Bursledon & Warsash Regatta 2013 | 1260 |
2014 | Hamble River SC | Barts Bash | 1475 |
2018 | Chichester YC | Various, including 'Last Gasp | 1260 |
2019 | Chichester YC | Dinghy Week 2019 | 1475 |
2020 | Chichester YC | Dinghy Week 2020 | 1475 |
2020 | Thorney Island SC | 2020 UnRegatta Slow | 1380 |
2021 | Whitefriars SC | Various | 1445, changed to 1380 in Sept '21 |
2022 | Whitefriars SC | Various | 1380 |
So, if you're racing a Foxer in a multi-class fleet what should you use? Probably 1380 which is the same as a double-handed Mirror and similar to a single-handed Mirror, RS Tera Pro or Topper, which seems about right, but most of all make sure your race officer is sending their returns to the RYA!
